[Sparkle] Disabling Sparkle

I am a package maintainer for the MacPorts (http://www.macports.org) project. MacPorts, as well as Fink, build and install packages inside a package management framework that Sparkle interferes with. At MacPorts, we would like to be able to distribute, and have had requests to distribute, some applications that include Sparkle.

Is there an easy way to disable the Sparkle updater when we are building the packages that we distribute, or is this currently something that has to be done on a package-by-package basis?

The problem with Sparkle in a managed environment is that when the application gets updated, the package manager finds that the updated files no longer match the checksums associated with them and then fails to update, install, or uninstall the packages that were installed in the managed environment in the first place.
